The Little Darlings

Update on my little friendly skunks....they are happy little campers and seem to like 8:30pm as the perfect dining hour!

I sometimes forget to check before I walk out there just to make sure I don't frighten them....that could be sad..FOR ME! but they seem to be getting quite nonchalant about my presence.
Although as you can see in the bottom picture, I was trying to edge closer for a better picture and I think the raised tail is a warning sign. Well I chose to take it as one in any event and backed up.

They are so cute though and move super slow, noise doesn't seem to bother them, only if they see me moving closer they get edgy. The other night one walked over my foot trying to make his escape.

They are tentatively called TweedleDee and TweedleDum. If I am not mistaken these guys hibernate in the winter so they will probably be gone soon to a burrow. In the meantime I get a few good laughs at their antics and so far no "unhappy" memories!

You are one brave girl, my friend! As we were driving home from VA Friday night, we drove through two areas that had the tell-tale aroma of "skunkage".

A lot more common on our property in WI, we had a Golden retriever who had a thing for them after being sprayed once. From then on, it was war for that dog, and there were many (too many) times that we had to treat him for their smelly payback. I hope you don't have an experience like that, but in case it happens, I have a two word treatment for you...MASSENGIL POWDER. No kidding. Works like a charm. Of course, don't send your husband to purchase a large quantity of it, or he'll have a heyday (like Handsome did), explaining why he needed massive quantities to treat the dog. I got lots of funny looks the next time I had to go shopping at our small grocery!
    See you again soon.

  3. Hi Tina!! I have missed your last couple of posts and see that you've gone from fixing butterflies to fixing dinner for the skunks--What progress!!! :-))) We have had them here and the dogs were chasing what I "thought" was the cat and it ended up being a skunk--YIKES!! I'm glad you're keeping a safe distance, but I have to admit I'd be seeing how close I could get too!!
    :-)))

  12. The names are perfect.. Oh what my son would do to have a pet skunk.. A tourist was staying in the village for a few weeks a couple years ago and he had a pet skunk that traveled with him.. He was a rescue skunk from Natural Resources.very friendly.. no scent glands.. My son became quite attached to him...
