Yep I love to reach out and feel things. Now in some situations that could be dangerous, like with bears or sharks, but bees I can handle.
They are called Bee Assassins! If you go Google them you will see they are quite nasty from a bee's point of view. I have been watching for them on the flowers and discovered a few and they do indeed kill bees and I can't have that!!! Bees are struggling enough in this world as it is and I have to do my small part to protect them and keep the plants pollinated.
Although the pictures on Google show them as redish or blackish, mine are green with touches of yellow. They are smaller than bees but evidently their bite is toxic and paralyzes the bee. Yuck!
Well I am off to have breakfast with a friend this morning so I will bid you ado for now. Have a great day all!
Bruce Wayne!
So named because his fur forms a "batman" like mask on his face and as we all know Bruce Wayne was Batman's secret identity!
Well I have a few objects lounging about the garden waiting to be painted or transformed into "new" things. This old birdcage is one of the objects in question and recently in a storm it was blown over and guess who decided it made a great playhouse? Yep Bruce Wayne. I have to admit I kind of thought it was a suitable habitation for him considering the mischief he gets up to....
Do you think he thought he was fooling the birds into thinking he was one of them?

Have a great day in the garden!
Last night I just happened to go out on the deck and glanced up at the sky and just stared in wonder. It took me a minute to have the presence of mind to get the camera! I have no words that adequately describe how amazing these clouds looked. This view lasted about 15 minutes and then it was too dark to take further pictures. What a lovely way to end the day!

I sometimes forget to check before I walk out there just to make sure I don't frighten them....that could be sad..FOR ME! but they seem to be getting quite nonchalant about my presence.
Although as you can see in the bottom picture, I was trying to edge closer for a better picture and I think the raised tail is a warning sign. Well I chose to take it as one in any event and backed up.
They are so cute though and move super slow, noise doesn't seem to bother them, only if they see me moving closer they get edgy. The other night one walked over my foot trying to make his escape.

They are tentatively called TweedleDee and TweedleDum. If I am not mistaken these guys hibernate in the winter so they will probably be gone soon to a burrow. In the meantime I get a few good laughs at their antics and so far no "unhappy" memories!Marguerite (Tina) Smith Harthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06654002122173967940noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8308894822276568486.post-14452065921181176992010-08-19T09:41:00.001-04:002010-08-19T10:00:07.502-04:00Mystery Solved!

Finally I have a picture of the culprits who have been eating the cat food! Have you ever tried to nurse a butterfly, repair a tiny wing?
My cat named Bliss jumped on this little guy and cracked her wing and I spent the better part of today trying to apply tiny bits of coffee filter dipped in white glue to the injury. She seems alright but she won't try to fly yet so I have no idea if it will work or needs more re-enforcing. Of course the problem is to keep it as light as possible so her balance is not thrown off. I think now I have to put her in God's hands and say a few prayers.

This was one of those mornings, fog everywhere so thick you could cut it with the proverbial knife....bonus!....everything was covered in heavy dew and that caused all the thousands of spider webs to stand out in intense relief.

Has there ever been a more beautiful lace created than the beautiful delicate work these small creatures produce!
Is this not the greatest little guy ever? Working their little hearts out to make the garden and this world a more beautiful place.
I had decided to take a late afternoon break and just head outside and see what the world was up to and I got lucky enough to get a picture of this guy in mid-flight! I hadn't realized I had caught him on film until I opened the pictures to edit. I was really excited about it as all summer I watch them and their friends working my flowers and admiring their persistence and dedication. He's obviously a typical drone, but I have seen many different kinds of flying insects that are not in this fella's genus. I have no idea what the others are but they seem to work just as hard so they are all welcome here!

I have actually gotten up on a crisp fall morning and found these sweeties asleep on the flowers where they stayed for the night. While they are still groggy I can reach over and pet their little backs and to me that is a thrill. The garden, no matter how humble, never fails to amaze me.
I just had to go out into the garden this morning and snap a some pictures, although not all the buds are fully open it was the first morning that wasn't sweltering here and to tell the truth there were a few moments when I wondered if we would get rain in time to save some of my plants! Praise the Lord that it rained yesterday and today again we are expecting thunderstorms.
Also I was impressed with the way some of the wild flowers at the periphery of the garden seem to compliment the plants I placed.
The Sunflowers are just starting to come into their own and there are so many varieties, each with it's own color variations and sizes. Later in the summer I get some that have blooms that are almost totally burgundy.
The two little yellow/orange guys are from plants that were here when I arrived and they seed themselves each year and spread to wherever they want to. I was told they may be flowers called a "strawflower" and to tell the truth those little flowers never wilt, bugs don't bother them, it's strange!

I took a few pictures of the Queen Anne Lace just because they are so beautiful and require zero help from me just like the lovely french blue Chicory. Next to each other they form a color combination that I just love.
And lastly my sweet little Dahlia, the first one to attempt to open this year and already the edges of her petals are looking raggedy.

Funny that the little plain yellow Sunflower (which for some reason only gets about 24" high) is the favorite of all the bees.
Nature is amazing! Have a wonderful gardening weekend!Marguerite (Tina) Smith Harthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06654002122173967940noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8308894822276568486.post-11148075178590906222010-07-02T09:19:00.003-04:002010-07-02T09:23:34.322-04:00Sunflowers & Delphiniums I just had to post a quick picture of the first of the Sunflowers to open here in my garden. My sunflowers are all thanks to birdseed not my planting but they are such a treasure and the bees have a field day with them and that makes me happy. As the summer progresses so many different kinds of Sunflowers will emerge, different shaped leaves and colors from pure light yellow all the way up to a reddish shade that is gorgeous. But for right now this beauty is one of the first and I was very thrilled to see it open at last!
Also yesterday while braving the craziness at Wally World I found this little guy and as it was on sale I just had to have it. I am a huge fan of Delphiniums but have never had any of my own and here was this sweet little guy who only gets 12" high!!! "Summer Nights" it is called and look at that blue, isn't that just the most lovely thing? So home it came and this weekend I will find the perfect spot for it, hopefully near some Queen Anne's Lace as the white flowers would set off this guy perfectly. Have a delightful 4th fellow gardeners!
Well maybe you don't do that but Tina here sure did and I have no clue what these guys are. They have thorns and have developed these cute little yellow flowers. I could only get one picture as it is raining cats and dogs out there today, but the leaf is quite distinctive so I should be able to track it down. Or if someone has an idea please do let me know...:) They are trying valiantly to claim a spot amidst the sunflowers which usually take over at some point in the summer. So I am going to try giving them some breathing space and see what develops.Marguerite (Tina) Smith Harthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06654002122173967940noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8308894822276568486.post-39162192782085842512010-06-24T16:08:00.000-04:002010-06-24T16:08:26.290-04:00Daylily Dawn

I was so happy today when I saw that the Daylilies were opening at last. It had been raining all last night so they were covered in lovely water drops and they just looked so perfect I had to get a photo or two. I do wish they lasted a little more than a day each flower, but there are plenty this year so I should have blooms for a few weeks, That will give the Sunflowers and Dahlias a chance to catch up!
Finally I have something opening up. The ever lovely Stella D'Oro. I love the rich, buttery yellow of the flowers. The birds of course are not that stupid so he wasted his time, but made a cute picture.Marguerite (Tina) Smith Harthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06654002122173967940noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8308894822276568486.post-74902492563567488282010-06-05T16:39:00.000-04:002010-06-05T16:39:03.719-04:00

What a happy thing to come outside after a big rain and find tiny treasures like this little guy having a feast on the Comfrey flowers!
Forgive my less than professional photography but I have yet to master touch-ups on Photoshop! I just had to get out there this morning and get a couple of pictures of the Irises while they looked so lovely. I had forgotten all about the pale violet ones that were a gift from the garden of a friend last year and to see them blooming this year was a real treat.
I just love having a garden, even if it were just the wildflowers in the meadow, it enriches my life so much and whenever I am out there talking to the plants, reveling in their beauty, I see the face of God and the world looks like a much sweeter, kinder place!Marguerite (Tina) Smith Harthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06654002122173967940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8308894822276568486.post-44017191445063740572010-05-27T09:26:00.000-04:002010-05-27T09:26:36.681-04:00Storm!

I wanted rain for the garden and by golly I got rain along with some hail and high winds! But the garden finally got some rain and things look a little less parched this morning. I know I was getting tired of lugging water jugs all over the place so today I get a break...yah! Here's a little picture of the only lightening I could catch on camera. It went on for a few hours. I was just happy that the 90 degree temps we had been experiencing for the last few days were over.
My tiny patch of poppies is just popping out all over. What a shame that they look so good for a few hours then just disintegrate like they were made of tissue paper. Regal to shabby *sigh* in hours. And then there is the "no name" plant my girlfriend Julie gave me last year. It's been in her grandmother's garden for years and now that Julie inherited the property she has been updating things like the water pump and pipes and in the process had to transplant a few of the old garden girls. She knew I loved this plant and so she divided it up and brought me a little for my garden. They seem similar to a Stella D'Oro, same kind of tubers that multiply each season. But no one I have shown them to knows what they are called. If you have any idea please let me know!Marguerite (Tina) Smith Harthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06654002122173967940noreply@blogger.com5
